Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a lower age limit for joining a U3A?
No. However you should have finished your full time employment, career and full time work commitments and by definition be in the "Third Age" (A time for personal development, fulfillment and retirement).
Are there any entry qualifications required?
None whatsoever. Professional, academic or degrees are not necessary. Just being able to share your knowledge with and learn from group members is all that is needed.

Will I be awarded qualifications by the U3A interest groups?
No. The interest groups share their knowledge in informal meetings in a friendly environment, learning together. We come together to learn for the enjoyment of doing so.

Who are the group leaders?
Volunteer members like you and I who all input their skills and knowledge for the collective benefit of the interest group.
In writing the Objects and Principles of the University of the Third Age, Peter Laslett wrote "Those who teach shall also learn and those who learn shall also teach" (Laslett principle 1) A full transcript of the U3A Objects and Principles can be downloaded in PDF form at this link

What costs are involved?
Membership of the Sherburn and Villages U3A costs £10 a year. This includes a capitation fee to be paid to the national body the Third Age Trust. This fee provides members with a comprehensive range of information and the use of learning resources material, together with insurance cover at the general and group meetings. We also ask all members for a contribution of £1 at the monthly general meetings, to cover the cost of hiring the hall and providing tea or coffee and biscuits. Additional charges at the interest group meeting vary depending upon the venue, frequency of meeting and other costs involved. Group leaders can provide this information.

Do I need lots of time?
The general meeting lasts about 2 hours and is once a month. Interest groups set their own times and frequency of meeting and details can usually be found on the groups detail page.

How large is the catchment area for Sherburn and Villages U3A?
There is no defined area or limit as we welcome anyone no matter where they live if they have an interest in our groups activity.
