In March 2012 the U3A will celebrate it's 30th Anniversary.

Exactly thirty years ago, in March 1982, the U3A held an experimental Easter School and spent nearly half of the £10,000 Nuffield Foundation grant which was the first money it could call its own.

Its first ever committee then squeezed into one car and held the first national committee meeting on the road from Cambridge to London. Quite quickly, there were three local U3As.

Now there are over 840, with between them nearly 275,000 members. It’s grown bigger in every one of those 30 years. And we’re celebrating both the anniversary and the success.

True to the U3A spirit, how people celebrate the anniversary will be decided locally, not centrally, but The Trust is backing it up with national activity and some materials designed to help the celebrations.

Sherburn and Villages U3A are collecting used British and foreign postage stamps.

One of our members, Mary Hancock, is collecting used postage stamps, either British or foreign, on behalf of the York branch of "Hearing Dogs for Deaf People".

Di Sewell is also helping to collect the stamps. You can pass them on to Mary or Di, or bring them to our monthly meeting to put into a collecting box.

Sherburn and Villages U3A hold it's first Group Leaders and Helpers Workshop

U3A Group Leaders Workshop Picture

Our first Group Leaders and Helpers workshop was held at The Lady Popplewell Centre on Saturday 5th March with 24 people present.

It was so useful to have had the talk by Terry Hardie only two days before providing much material for the workshop and enabling many questions to be answered.

Amongst other things matters relating to handling groups’ money and arranging outings and events were discussed and some useful points taken away for consideration by the Committee.

A tasty buffet lunch was delivered by a local caterer and was enjoyed by all.

The Committee will now be working on producing a handbook to refer to so that Group Leaders and Helpers can be confident they are following agreed procedures and avoiding any nasty pitfalls.

The Yorkshire and Humberside Region meeting at Doncaster

Five of us attended a meeting in Doncaster on Thursday 3rd March arranged by the Yorkshire and The Humber Regional Committee.

Terry Hardie the Honorary Treasurer of The Third Age Trust spoke to us for two to three hours on Practical Aspects of Running Your U3A.

He was extremely knowledgeable and held our attention the whole time, answering our many questions as they arose.

For a new U3A this was a most useful and interesting talk.

We were provided with a buffet lunch over which we were able to chat with our Regional Trustee Anne Firth and people from other U3A’s in the region.

In the late afternoon we negotiated the tricky procedure of finding where we had parked our cars and then made our way back to Sherburn with much to think about and implement.

15th April 2010

Mike Allison

Mike Allison is the National Aid Coordinator for the Chernobyl Children’s Project.  Since the nuclear disaster 1986, Mike has taken part in many aid convoys to Belarus.  At our general meeting on 15th April he gave us an illustrated talk about the work the project does to promote better care for children and young people with disabilities.

We were very moved by the plight of some of the children and the poverty of the area in which the charity operates - Thank God for people like Mike and the work that they do.

21st February 2010

Chris Stevens

A record number of members attended our monthly general meeting to hear our own, retired Squadron Leader, Chris Stevens, talk about his adventures as an RAF fighter pilot. His distinguished career included a tour of duty in the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at the time of the 50th anniversary of D-day. We were enthralled by his account accompanied by photographs and video clips some of which were taken by a camera attached to his flying helmet.
