U3A is the short name used for "University of the Third Age"
The aim of the U3A is to provide anyone who is no longer in full time employment the opportunity to carry on the principle of "Lifelong Learning" which is the U3A motto.
Toulouse University in France was the origin of the U3A. From this beginning in 1972 there are now many local U3A's around the world belonging to the International Association of Universities of the Third Age known as IAUTA.
The Third Age Trust in the UK became a member of IAUTA in 1982 and there are now over 840 U3A's with between them nearly 275,000 members in the UK, as at 20th February 2012.
"Education" is the First Age
"Career and Family" is the Second Age
"Retirement" is the Third Age
This is a time for personal development, fulfillment and enjoyment."Dependency" is the Fourth Age
Not as we know it!
U3A membership does not require any academic qualifications and does not award any either, however it does provide the opportunity to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups, not for qualifications, but for fun.
All U3A's in the UK are members of the The Trust which is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. At the AGM a National Executive Committee is elected on a geographical basis. This Executive Committee are both trustees of the charity and form a Board of Directors for the Company. Support by The Trust for the Local U3A's is provided by it's Development Officer. The Resource Center provides a wealth of material via a postal loan service on slides, CD-ROM's and DVD's as well as a bulletin "Sources".
All members receive a copy of the quarterly magazine and benefit from insurance cover whilst attending U3A events, paid for by a portion of the annual membership fee.
Local U3A's are self funded, and managed within the Third Age Trust with their own members, constitution and hold AGM's
Members form interest groups to share their skills, experience and knowledge and manage the running of their own group.
